Hi – I’m Hugh Barker, and welcome to The Social Edge.
I’m an entrepreneur, investor, husband, and father – someone who’s built businesses, negotiated complex deals, led teams through uncertainty, and learned firsthand how much relationships shape outcomes. I live with my wife on the edge of a beautiful national park, volunteer on a heritage railway, and spend as much time as possible with my two daughters, who continually remind me what growth and resilience really look like.
But that’s not where this story began...
As a teenager, I had almost no confidence. I disliked social situations, avoided eye contact, and struggled to speak up. At twelve, I was sent to boarding school, where social awareness was not optional. You quickly learned who had influence, who didn’t, and how small mistakes could carry consequences. It was challenging, but it forced me to observe people closely – how relationships formed, how trust was built, and how subtle differences in behavior changed outcomes.
After school, I worked a variety of jobs – from barman to builder’s laborer to software developer. I wasn’t naturally gifted at coding, and I certainly wasn’t the most academic person in the room. What I discovered, however, was that I had a knack for building strong working relationships. I could sit with people from different departments, understand their challenges, and help design thoughtful solutions. That ability opened doors.
In 2009, I started my own software company, raised capital, hired a team, and delivered complex projects internationally. Years later, I sold the business successfully and moved into real estate investment. Across every stage – from negotiating with lenders to managing employees to building partnerships across continents – one skill consistently made the difference: the ability to create, nurture, and strengthen relationships.
The Social Edge was born from that realization. Communication is not about being louder, slicker, or more charismatic. It’s about understanding what is actually happening in conversations and responding with clarity, calm, and awareness. These skills are learnable. They are practical. And they can change the trajectory of both your professional and personal life.
I’m looking forward to helping you develop that edge for yourself with my free masterclass.
